User data (contacts, photos, messages and files) and add-on applications such as Java games or Symbian applications will be deleted during the software update. It is strongly recommended that you make a back-up of data such as contacts, messages, and images before updating the mobile device firmware.

You can also backup your phone memory data to your memory card.

To backup to your memory card:

1. Select Tools > Memory from the main menu
2. Select Options > Backup phone mem.

Your Nokia device display screen should go blank while being updated. Do not disconnect the device at this time.

SecureMe is a anti-theft/security application for S60 devices. The application allows the device owner to lock the device remotely via SMS commands or automatically when the SIM is changed.

1) Due to the nature of the application, access after the initial installation is only possible by inputting the password key, which by default is #5555, unless manually changed. No application icon will appear in your applications folder.
2) Upon installing the application you will be prompted to enable autostart. This is crucial for the proper function of the application. Thereafter the application will ALWAYS restart on device reboot. There is no option to disable this. This is also a security feature that makes the application more effective.

As wireless phone and PDA networks become more numerous and more complex, it has become more difficult to secure them against electronic attacks in the form of viruses or other malicious software.
Internet-enabled smart phones have gaping security weaknesses. Any smart phone ? including Blackberry, Windows Mobile, iPhone and Symbian phones ? can be hacked by a geek with a little bit cunningness. Even Bluetooth makes your phone a potential target.

How a hacker does his play:
1> The Hacker sends a SMS/MMS/Bluetooth message to the target smart phone.
2> The smart phone owner clicks on the message which installs the spyware on the cell phone.
3> The Hacker gains control of the cell phone.
4> Hacker can listen to the calls, can spy the SMS's sent, can change the SMSes sent from the cell phone.
5> Spyware transmits the phone activity, contact list, files, call logs, SMSes through GPRS to the hacker.

So, what can we do to keep our cell phone secure?
Adopt a multi-layered security approach. Protect mobile devices with:

6> Don't accept files with .sis extensions from strangers.

The bottom line is nothing can be installed onto your Smartphone without your permission. Be extra cautious while installing applications from unknown sources.

This is a generic guide to take backup of your valuable contacts, notes, phone information and all the data that is present in the memory card.
I will explain the process that I follow to take my N73 backup using Nokia PC Suite. Download the latest version of nokia pc suite if you don't have it.

Step 1.
Connect your nokia cell phone with the computer with the USB cable. Open Nokia PC Suite and Click on Backup. A new window will pop up.


Step 2:
The new window will show your connected phone. Here it shows Nokia N73 connected. Click on the button as marked in the picture. You can select what all you want to take backup of.


Step 3:
Select and tick the items you want to take backup of. After you are done click next.

Step 4:
Backup will be stored in a folder chosen by you. Select the folder where you want the nokia content copier save the backup file.


Step 5:
Nokia content copier will start backing up your cell phone contents. A note of warning. Do not plug out or disconnect your cell phone once the back up is in process.


The above process will create a (.NBU) file. The same file can be restored using the same content copier.
